Mindfulness for reducing stress

Stress is an integral part of the world we live and work in. Some stress can be good to push you temporarily to the level of peak alertness and performance. But, when stress becomes a permanent fixture in your life it starts to take its toll on your physical and mental health.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that. Mindfulness training is perfect for reducing stress.

Are you struggling to cope with the stress in your life?

If you are struggling to cope with stress in your life, or would like to develop a more balanced state of wellbeing, we can help provide you with the Mindfulness training to reduce your stress.

Martin worked in sales and marketing for the pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas sectors for 18 years. He has a deep understanding of the pressures of balancing a high-stress career ,with the demands of modern living. And he knows what it feels like when stress becomes difficult to manage. That is why Martin first participated in an 8 week ‘Living Well with Stress’ course at ‘Breathworks’, several years ago. It changed his life and inspired him to become a Mindfulness Teacher!

How can mindfulness help?

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is not simply a way to unwind after a stressful day, like a glass of wine, or a bar of chocolate. It’s much more than that.
Mindfulness training gives you tools and techniques to manage your stress, that will last you a lifetime.
Practising mindfulness meditation techniques can help you:
• worry less about experiences you find stressful
• be better prepared before you enter a stressful situation
• manage your response to stress as it arises
• become more resilient and self-aware
• gain confidence that you can manage situations you find challenging
• enjoy life more because you are taking control over your stress-response.

Our Method

As when learning any new skill, the more you practise mindfulness, the more effective it becomes. That is why we offer 8-week mindfulness stress reduction training courses in  – either on a 1-2-1 basis or in a group. The 1-2-1 sessions can be provided in person, or via Skype. As well as training your mind, you will learn how to pay attention to your body, and to the world around you. By the time your course finishes you will have already started to weave a range of mindfulness techniques into your daily life to reduce stress. And you will be seeing enough positive changes in your life to realise there is a huge benefit to continuing your mindfulness practice.

You might find that stress is no longer controlling your life, or that you are becoming better at managing the physical and psychological impact of having a health condition. Perhaps your concentration and focus at work has improved, or you notice yourself becoming more resilient to the challenges each day throws at you.

You can refresh your practice regularly at our mindfulness refresher days. These offer a great opportunity to remind yourself of the key techniques, and to learn from others’ experience of using mindfulness to improve their life by reducing stress.

You can also choose additional 1-to-1 mindfulness sessions, if you want help working through a particular issue where you are struggling to apply your mindfulness techniques.

A little bit of history.

Mindfulness practice came into health care over 35 years ago, thanks to Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues, who developed an eight-week course in mindfulness for people with chronic health conditions at the Massachusetts Medical School, USA. This course is now called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and is used all over the world, for a variety of different health conditions.

A little over 10 years ago three psychologists – Mark Williams, John Teasdale and Zindel Segal – adapted the MBSR course for people who had suffered from depression, as a way to prevent relapse. They called their course Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and it’s largely is due to them that mindfulness as a health intervention has become so well known in the UK.

In the meantime, Vidyamala Burch (founder of Breathworks) was developing her own adaptation of MBSR, based on her experience of chronic pain, which she calls the Breathworks Living Well with Pain and Illness course. (For information on this, go to article). The Breathworks Mindfulness for Stress course was developed by Gary Hennessey (Internationally renowned Mindfulness expert and Martin’s Mentor) specifically for people who find the demands of contemporary life stressful.

So, while Breathworks and Inspire Mindfulness courses are similar to the MBSR and MBCT courses (probably 90% in common), they are also a little different. One of the ways they differ is our inclusion of the kindly awareness, or kindness meditation practice. Although this is taught on the MBSR and MBCT day retreats, it is not part of their eight-week course.
* There is significant research which demonstrates the benefits of kindness in reducing stress/anxiety and enhancing wellbeing.
